Ground Based Radar Systems for Movement Monitoring (GBInSAR) (Wed, Aug 26, 2009)
Ground Based Radar Systems for Movement Monitoring (GBInSAR)
Presented by Dr Carlo Rivolta
Ellegi srl, Milano, Italy
Venue: 3/F, Mariners Club, Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
Time: Wednesday 26 August 2009, 6.00 for 6.30pm
Synopsis:
An innovative technique for monitoring landslide and structural displacement and provision of early
warning systems has been developed using ground-based synthetic aperture radar interferometry
(GBInSAR). This lecture will provide a brief description of the principles behind GBInSAR, the
mechanics of the system and a presentation of the different potential applications using relevant case
studies, including monitoring of mobile terrain, landslides, quarries and manmade structures.
These case studies will present the results from the use of GBInSAR on landslides affecting major Swiss
national roads, on fjords in Norway and in various locations in Italy, including monitoring results from the
Stromboli Volcano.
The GBInSAR LiSALab system is a ground-based radar interferometer specifically designed for field use.
The technique allows collection of multi-temporal displacement maps with a spatial resolution of a few
meters and with a sub-millimetric accuracy. Such information enables better interpretation of internal
landslide kinematics and distribution.
About the Speaker:
Carlo Rivolta, Chief Executive Officer, Ellegi srl
Ellegi srl is a service provider for remote sensing measurement of displacement and deformation of
hillside terrain and manmade structures, using ground-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system,
known as the LiSALab system. The company also provides software production and system integration
capabilities, production and developments of data acquisition, visualization and data-analysis systems.
Carlo is the Chief Executive Officer of Ellegi srl and he has been responsible for development of the
mechanical and electromechanical components of the GBInSAR LiSALab system and the related
business.
