Probabilistic approaches to the assessment of natural hazard and risk
Presented by Dr Hannah Brackley and Dr Kelvin Berryman
GNS Science, Lower Hutt, New Zealand
Venue: 3/F, Mariners Club, Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
Time: Wednesday 19 August 2009, 6.00 for 6.30pm
Synopsis:
GNS Science is New Zealand’s Government-owned national earth sciences organisation, and one of the
world's foremost earth science organisations. Probabilistic hazard and risk modelling is a powerful tool
that GNS applies to estimate future economic loss and social impact from natural hazards. GNS also
collaborates with large asset owners to make insurance decisions, engineers to develop appropriate design
parameters and to prioritise mitigation measures, and the wider community to plan hazard response,
prepare communities, and develop warning and evacuation systems. Probabilistic hazard and risk
assessment methods have also been applied to earthquake, tsunami, landslide, volcano, nuclear waste
siting, and carbon sequestration. An introduction into the application of probabilistic hazard and risk
assessment methods will be presented for consideration in a Hong Kong context.
About the Speakers:
Hannah Brackley – Business Development Manager, GNS Science
Hannah has a technical background with 8 years’ research experience in the areas of
sedimentology, biogeochemistry and erosion-related carbon transfers. Since 2005, she
has taken on project design, project management and business development
responsibilities for GNS Science’s Natural Hazards Group. Currently Hannah is
responsible for putting together multidisciplinary teams of hazard experts involved in
the assessment of hazards and their associated physical, economic and societal risks.
Kelvin Berryman – Principal Scientist, GNS Science
Kelvin has 34 years of experience in geological hazards research and consultancy. In
New Zealand he has led research in active faulting, crustal deformation, and tsunami,
and contributed to many client-focussed projects for local and regional government, the
energy industry, the Earthquake Commission and Civil Defence & Emergency
Management. Recent work has included hazard assessments for nuclear facilities in
Australia and Japan.
Please join us for the presentation and drinks at the China
Coast Bar opposite. GNS Science has kindly agreed to
sponsor the bar for the evening.
