Technical Visit to the Lai Chi Kok Transfer Scheme (Sat, Jan 23, 2010)
Technical Visit to the Lai Chi Kok Transfer Scheme. (Saturday, 23rd January 2010)
The Lai Chi Kok Transfer Scheme (DSD Contract DC/2007/16) is being undertaken to alleviate flooding
of the low lying developed areas of Kowloon by capturing rainwater from the upper catchment and
diverting it via tunnel to discharge into Victoria Harbour. The project comprises the construction of a
drainage tunnel of about 3.7km in length and about 4.9m in diameter, from Shek Kip Mei to Victoria
Harbour near Stonecutters Island; six intakes and about 270m of connection adits. The tunnels will be
constructed by TBM and will pass through rock, mixed ground and soft ground strata, with connection
adits and shafts to be constructed by blasting techniques.
The visit will include a presentation about the scheme and details of the TBM, which includes some special
features for this project. For the visit, the TBM should be under final erection and testing before launching,
and the backup gantries, lining segments and slurry treatment plant should be available for inspection.
