About Us

We are the Hong Kong Branch of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IMMM).

The Branch was formed in December 1984 and is a registered society under the Laws of Hong Kong. The membership of the Branch increased steadily in the 1980s and 1990s, and now exceeds 150. Branch Members are drawn from a wide range of disciplines, including geology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, mining engineering, materials engineering, tunnelling and materials science.

The Branch organises a wide variety of learned society meetings which qualify as Continuing Professional Development. Evening technical meetings on a broad range of subjects are generally held at the Mariners Club in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Local and occasional regional field visits are arranged to sites of interest, including tunnels, quarries, mines and other major engineering projects.

The Hong Kong Branch has organised or co-organised five international conferences, namely 'Rock Excavation in an Urban Environment' in 1986, 'Rock Cavern - Hong Kong' in 1989, 'Engineering Geology HK2000' in 2000, and Natural Terrain Hazards in 2002, and 'Hong Kong Soils and Rocks' in 2004.

On behalf of the Institute, members of the Branch conduct local interviews for Corporate Membership of IMMM and for registration as Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council.

Any IMMM members passing through Hong Kong who may be interested in participating in Branch activities are welcome to contact the Hon. Secretary by e-mail at secretary@iom3.org.hk .
