Council


The IMMM in Hong Kong is run by a council currently comprising the following members.

Guy Bridges, President

Guy is a Technical Director with Aecom Asia Co. Ltd.  He graduated as a mining geologist, and has spent the last 20 years in the tunnelling industry in the UK and Hong Kong. He has been an active member of the Hong Kong Branch of the IoM3 for the last 5 years, and was a key participant in the organisation of the recent tunnelling conference.

Ever since a summer placement where Guy was employed as a miner in a Cornish tin mine, he has been involved in projects utilising blasting for excavation of tunnels and site formations.  Since arriving in Hong Kong, Guy has gained first hand experience of tunnel and surface blasting, with experience gained from recent projects including the Jordan Valley site formation, Ocean Park site formation and tunnels, and Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel, amongst others.

James Rickard, Honorary Secretary

James is a Senior Resident Engineer with Ove Arup & Partners. He graduated as a Mining Engineer, and has spent the last 16 years in the tunnelling industry predominantly in Hong Kong. He has gained extensive knowledge and practical experience in a range of tunnelling methods from small diameter TBM’s to large cavern excavations through different ground conditions. He possesses extensive explosive engineering experience in both tunnelling and open cast methods, predominately in an urban environment, which has led him to become a respected Tunnelling & Blasting Engineer and is currently a member on various committees in Hong Kong to develop the Tunnelling & Explosives Industries.   



 

Alberto Dias, Honorary Treasurer

Alberto is currently employed as a Principal Engineering Geomorphologist with Maunsell Geotechnical Services Ltd. He has been working for MGSL since 2000 and prior to that worked for Halcrow Asia Partnership as well as having been seconded to the Planning Division of the GEO for several years. He has been based in Hong Kong since 1994 and has been involved with numerous landslide investigations and other natural terrain related projects.

George Ho, Council Member 

George is currently employed with Scott Wilson as a Tunnel Geologist on MTR South Island Lint (East) and Tsuen Wan Drainage Tunnel projects providing geological advice on tunnel temporary support, geotechnical instrumentation planning and monitoring. He has worked with Scott Wilson for 10 years since graduation he has been involved in a number of key projects including XRL, Penny's Bay reclamation, the site formation at Jordan Valley and the Northshore Lantau Development Feasibility Study. He has also been involved ground investigation, Landslip Preventive Measures programmes and Natural Terrain Hazard Studies. 


 

Lawrence Lee, Council Member 

Lawrence is now currently working as Resident Blasting Supervisor in Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd. in Development at Anderson Road project since 2008. Before he joined Arup, Lawrence worked in one of the largest main contractor in Hong Kong, Dragages Hong Kong Ltd. over 12 years and participated in several tunnel projects, KCRC West Rail DB320 Tsing Tsuen Tunnel using Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine, CLP Tsz Wan Shan Cable Tunnel using Compressed Air Tunnel Boring Machine and Ocean Park Funicular Tunnel using Drill & Blast Method.


 

Alexander Mackay, Council Member 

Alexander (Sandy) is presently a Technical Director with the Snowy Mountain Engineering Corporation (SMEC) based in Hong Kong. He is a Chartered Civil and Mining Engineer and Chartered Geologist with almost 25 years professional experience and has served on the IMMM Committee for over 5 years. His countries of practice have included Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Vietnam, Spain, China and the Middle East and his expertise ranges from mining and bored tunnels, deep basements, site formation, reclamation and oil and gas pipeline installation, ranging in capital cost up to US$ 24 billion. In his spare time he likes geological visits, looking after the children and drinking wine.



 

Andy Raine, Council Member 

Graduated in Mining Engineering 1986 in UK. Initially worked in government research into artificial geothermal energy resource creation and subsequently transferred to the private sector in 1988 on the channel tunnel rail link as a section engineer. Worked in Australia between 1990 – 1995 on civil and mining projects. Moved to Hong Kong in 1995 to join Dragages Hong Kong Ltd working on both drill & blast, hard rock and soft ground TBM’s. Currently is Construction manager for the Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel which includes 6.5km of bored tunnel and 5 km of drill and blast adit tunnels at the western end of the project.


Chris Wong, Council Member 

Chris graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Hong Kong with first class honours in 2005. Upon graduation, he was employed by a contractor and worked as a site engineer and design engineer for various construction projects. In 2009, Chris obtained his chartership in civil engineering. Chris is keen on tunnelling works and he was involved in local tunnel projects such as Kowloon Southern Link KDB200 and Ocean Park Redevelopment CI05 – Site Formation, Funicular Tunnel and Mics Works.  He is currently employed by Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd. as an Assistant Resident Engineer for the project Hong Kong West Drainage Tunnel. 



 

Ricky Yim, Council Member 

Ricky is a geotechnical engineer with 15 years wide-ranging experience of civil and geotechnical engineering in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, includingthe geotechnical input at tender design, preliminarily design, detailed design, construction supervision, and final account stages of a number of large scale underground and tunnel engineering projects. Ricky currently is the Technical Director of SMEC Asia Ltd.  and also the Tunnel Manager – Asia Pacific for SMEC International Pty Ltd. 



 
YC Lam, Co-opted Council Member 

Mr. Lam is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with Maunsell. He had been serving on the committee from 2002 to 2005 and has been the webmaster since 2002. He involved in some local tunneling projects like HATS, Rehabilitation of Anderson Road Quarry, Tai Lam Section of KCRC West Rail, Pak Shing Kok Tunnel of MTRC Tseung Kwan O Extension and CLP Cable Tunnels. He is currently working on some WSD & DSD projects. In 2001, Mr. Lam worked in the United States on the Blackhawk Tunnel project. 

Keith Roberts, Co-opted Council Member 
 
Keith works for the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the HKSAR Government.  He is predominantly involved in the auditing of private and public geotechnical works falling within the Mainland East Division of GEO.  He has previously undertaken engineering geology and advisory studies related to underground cavern development, tunnel works, borrow area assessments and natural terrain assessments in Hong Kong.  Keith is a Chartered Engineer as well as a Member of the IMMM, Member of HKIE and RPE(G).  Keith first graduated in Mining Geology and later obtained an MSc in Engineering Geology.  He worked in the South African gold mining industry in the fields of mining geology and rock mechanics and on the Channel Tunnel Project as an engineering geologist before moving to GEO.
